Legislation begins to move in short session

RALEIGH — Legislation making it lawful to smoke marijuana or consume cannabis-infused products for medical purposes in North Carolina cleared the state Senate on Monday evening following the Senate’s vote to send Medicaid expansion to the house last week. Gov. Roy Cooper also issued an executive order that will provide paid leave to employees to take a day off for a day of “personal significance.”  After no debate, the medical marijuana measure received bipartisan support by a vote of 36-7. The margin was similar to the outcome of an initial Senate vote last week that followed floor discussion. The bill…

Pinecrest takes pride in powerful postseason

BURLINGTON — Pinecrest couldn’t dent Charlotte Providence’s perfect season, but the Patriots left the Class 3-A baseball state finals with an experience worth savoring. They’d like to be playing in the final weekend of the season again. “We’re looking to come back,” junior third baseman/pitcher Colby Wallace said. “We know how this loss felt.” It was a stinging conclusion to the season for Pinecrest, which pushed Charlotte Providence to 10 innings in Game 2 of the championship series before falling 3-1 on Saturday at Burlington Athletic Stadium. The Patriots advanced to the finals by winning a regional championship for just…

PINE NEEDLES — This year’s U.S. Women’s Open was the fourth to be held at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Resort, the most for a single venue in the event. It’s the fifth overall to be held in the Pinehurst area. The U.S. Golf Association likes Moore County so much it’s bringing its headquarters to Pinehurst and has already announced plans to bring both the women’s and men’s Opens to Pinehurst’s famed No. 2 course on consecutive weeks in 2029 along with four other dates for the men at No. 2 starting in 2024.  As far as Leona Maguire is…

HUDSON: Democrats responsible for high prices

HUDSON: Democrats responsible for high prices

“Higher energy prices act like a tax.” Former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snow was exactly right when it comes to the burden high energy prices have on American families. Unfortunately, this tax is one that Democrats in Washington seem more than willing to pass on to you and your family. Gas prices have continued to soar because of President Joe Biden and Washington Democrats’ ongoing war on American energy. Last week, the national average price for gas hit a new record 10 days in a row. For the first time ever, the price of gas is now…

Democrats voting in GOP primaries might have tilted results in some races

Democrats voting in GOP primaries might have tilted results in some races

WASHINGTON, D.C. — An Associated Press analysis of early voting records found more than 37,000 people who voted in Georgia’s Democratic primary two years ago cast ballots in last week’s Republican primary, an unusually high number of so-called crossover voters. The data reveal crossover voters were consequential in defeating Donald Trump’s endorsed candidates for secretary of state and, to a lesser extent, governor in the Peach State.  Gov. Brian Kemp did not ultimately need Democrats in his blowout victory against his Trump-backed opponent, but Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger probably did. The Republican secretary of state cleared the 50% threshold…

Local bill draft struck down by council majority

PINEHURST — The Village of Pinehurst Council met Tuesday with the major item on the agenda being attempted legislation to regulate short-term rentals. The debate over whether or not to regulate short-term rentals has been ongoing in Pinehurst for months now, but it seems it will continue after an attempted local bill was struck down by a majority vote of the council.  The Village had drafted a local bill that would have been passed on to the state representatives and presented to the N.C. General Assembly to have legislation that clarified the Village’s municipal authority to regulate short term rentals.…

Most highway construction on hold for Memorial Day weekend

RALEIGH – The Memorial Day holiday weekend is the unofficial start to summer, and many people will kick it off with a road trip. AAA predicts nearly 1.2 million North Carolinians will travel at least 50 miles or more from home this Memorial Day weekend, which is a 7.2% increase over 2021. The N.C. Department of Transportation will be shutting down major construction that could affect travelers because of lane closures along interstates, U.S. and key N.C. routes from this Friday morning until next Tuesday night. There are some exceptions where construction conditions do not allow for the opening of…

SHAPIRO: The media’s big lie about the ‘great replacement theory’ and conservatism

Last week, a racist mass shooter massacred 10 people and wounded three others at a Buffalo, New York, supermarket. The shooter was a white supremacist; his hate-filled 180-page screed about why he had committed the shooting was replete with neo-Nazi sentiments. According to the shooter, he had to slaughter innocent black Americans in order to prevent the white population of the United States from being crowded out. “We are experiencing an invasion on a level never seen before in history,” wrote the perverse murderer. “This is ethnic replacement. This is cultural replacement. This is racial replacement. This is WHITE GENOCIDE.” …

ABERDEEN — The Town of Aberdeen Council met Monday, May 23 where the proposed budget for fiscal year 2022-23 was presented and approved. Several incumbents lose state legislative primaries

Several incumbents lose state legislative primaries

RALEIGH — Several state legislators won’t be returning to the North Carolina General Assembly next January after primary losses, while former lawmakers had mixed results in trying to get back to the House or Senate. Six incumbents — four Republicans and two Democrats — lost in Tuesday’s primaries for seats in their current chamber. Four of those sitting Republicans ran against fellow GOP incumbents who lived in the same district due to redistricting changes. Two Senate Democrats — Sens. Kirk deViere and Ernestine Bazemore — and Republican Rep. Pat Hurley — also lost primaries for their seats. In addition, two current…
