MOORE: The end of the climate change legend

MOORE: The end of the climate change legend

For many years now, there has been a spirited debate about whether climate change is science, religion or even perhaps a secret route to socialism. That question remains unanswered, but we’ve now discovered with certainty that climate change is a political albatross around the neck of the Democratic Party. The Left’s spiritual devotion to climate change has been speeding the Democrats over a political cliff this fall with likely unprecedented losses this November. The zero fossil fuels suicide pact was always an economic and political loser. More than 70% of all the energy we produce and consume in America derives…

HUDSON: A nation that cannot control its borders is not a nation

HUDSON: A nation that cannot control its borders is not a nation

President Reagan gave us this warning about the importance of protecting our homeland. Just last week, we heard a moving and passionate speech from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who spoke before a joint session of Congress on the dire situation facing his own country’s security. In his remarks, this bold and courageous leader repeated his call for increased military aid. While I do not support sending US troops into Ukraine, Zelenskyy’s harrowing speech reinforced my belief that we must do more to support Ukraine’s fight against Putin. The American Ammo in Defense of Ukraine Act, which I introduced earlier this…

KRUEGER: Ukraine: a modern day Moores Creek?

Smoke rises after shelling in Mariupol, Ukraine, Wednesday, March 9, 2022. (AP) Last week marked the 246th anniversary of the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge near Wilmington. British troops, aware of the American militia presence but convinced of their own superiority, proceeded across a partially dismantled bridge at Moores Creek into the waiting ambush of nearly 1,000 North Carolina patriots. The British commanders greatly underestimated the patriot’s desire for freedom and succumbed to inventive, guerilla tactics of the revolutionists. The battle marked the end of British authority in North Carolina and prompted North Carolinians to be the first colonists to…

BORTINS: Democrats don’t want you to believe the pain in your pocket

I believe America’s best days can be ahead of us, but it will take Americans uniting and going back to common sense policies to make it happen. I believe that in Moore County we will have an unprecedented opportunity this fall to elect local people who believe in you and me. President Biden in his State of the Union said his priority is on reducing inflation, but the radical left policies which he is supporting will only make it worst for most Americans. Here are some policies that would immediately help: Make America energy independent again. One of the sanctions…

LEVY: When will they ever learn?

LEVY: When will they ever learn?

As I explore the present, I can’t avoid comparing it to the past. The names change. The places and faces are never identical. But like a false backdrop behind the camera in a Zoom call, it’s only cosmetic. Essential reality never changes. For instance, on March 7, 1965, a group of voting rights demonstrators blocked traffic as they walked across Alabama’s Edmund Pettus Bridge. The marchers did not have a permit; so, the police ordered them to disperse. The marchers disobeyed the police and marched anyway. The result was called Bloody Sunday. Similarly, a group of Canadian truckers blocked the…

LEVY: Jack:  We can handle the truth

LEVY: Jack:  We can handle the truth

When White House spokesperson Jen Psaki was asked why illegal aliens were not screened for COVID, she replied, “They’re not intending to stay here for a lengthy period of time.”  There are two things that are unique to American voters. They like to end their sentences with prepositions and they like to be lied to. It is a heritage found throughout our history. In 1846, President James K. Polk (originally from Pineville) told Congress that “México has passed the boundary of the United States, invaded our territory and shed American blood on American soil.” It was a lie. At the…

LEVY: Woke English: a new American language

LEVY: Woke English: a new American language

What most Americans want is to live in a nation where everyone civilly communicates with one another. It has often been said that a common language is a necessity for a successful nation. While the rule has its exceptions in places such as Canada and Switzerland, even those countries have established dominant languages the mastery of which is a condition precedent to success. This argument became important in most of the United States until almost the close of the last century. Students were made to study and pass English courses from kindergarten through high school. Even children for whom English…

BORTINS: Free markets produce better outcomes

BORTINS: Free markets produce better outcomes

The things you used to buy, you can’t find; and if you can find it, you can’t afford it.  Inflation is when your hard-earned dollars buy less than what they did in the past. If you had $100 in your pocket on Jan. 1 of 2020, it will only purchase $94 worth of goods on Jan. 1 of 2022. In March of 2021, I called a friend who sells used cars in the Triangle about vehicle prices spiking. He replied, “Don’t worry. The federal government says it is transitory.” I told him it wasn’t. Now the government is telling us…

MCCAUGHEY: Dems reject work ethic, embrace freeloaders

MCCAUGHEY: Dems reject work ethic, embrace freeloaders

The Democratic Party used to call itself the party of working people and hail the “dignity of work.” No more. Now Democrats want to guarantee people who choose not to work an income funded by the suckers who do the right thing by showing up for work, caring for their family and paying taxes.  Fortunately, these self-supporting Americans just dodged a bullet. The failure to pass Build Back Better in Congress, thanks to holdout Sen. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) means that the monthly checks or automatic bank deposits to parents with kids, sometimes dubbed Biden Bucks, come to an end…

ERICKSON: Reversing Roe

ERICKSON: Reversing Roe

This past Wednesday, the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. In the case, Mississippi is seeking Court approval on a law that would ban abortion after 15 weeks, but Mississippi also argues Roe v. Wade itself should be reversed by the Court. It appears there are six votes on the Court for gutting Roe and five for reversing it altogether. One must remember that in major cases like this, the justices of the Court need no persuasion from the lawyers. Instead, it is through the lawyers that the justices have an initial…
