Union Pines, volleyball, tennis Tyne Ross is a two-sport senior for Union Pines, and that’s just in the fall. Ross is pulling double duty on the Vikings Volleyball and Women’s Tennis teams. Last week, she had 26 kills, 3 blocks and 25 digs in Union Pines’ loss to Pinecrest. That was Tuesday. Wednesday night, she won first singles, 6-0, in Union Pines’ 6-0 tennis win over Scotland. North Moore, men’s soccer Ricky Betancourt is a senior on the North Moore men’s soccer team. Betancourt had a hat trick in last Monday’s win over Bartlett Yancey, adding two assists in the 10-1 win. Two days later, he had two goals in a 3-1 overtime win over Seaforth. Betancourt leads the Vikings in goals on the season and is second in assists, as North Moore has run out to an unbeaten 6-0-1 mark, 4-0-1 in conference play.

It was a successful weekend for high school football teams in the county, as squads representing Moore County went a perfect 3-0 in Week Three.   In addition to North Moore’s win over Northwood, Pinecrest and Union Pines both landed in the win column on Friday.   Pinecrest moved to 3-0 on the season with a 27-24 win over Middle Creek, dropping the Mustangs to 1-2 on the season. North Moore (2-1, 1-0) ran all over Northwood (1-2, 0-1) Friday night, beating the Chargers, 38-12, in the first week of conference play.  The Mustangs overpowered the Chargers with their physicality in the run game and on the defensive side of the ball. Week two of the high school football season saw two of the three local teams go down in defeat.   Pinecrest was the lone team to record a win, moving to 2-0 on the season with a 44-20 road win over 0-2 Overhills. The Patriots have scored 92 points in their first two games. HOLLY SPRINGS — Uwharrie Charter secured its second state title in four seasons with a two-game series sweep of North Moore last weekend in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1A baseball championship series. In Game 1, Uwharrie Charter edged North Moore with a 2-1 win. ASHEBORO – North Moore has earned a chance to compete for a state championship.  The Mustangs (22-8) will face the Uwharrie Charter Eagles in the best-of-3 Class 1-A state championship series beginning Friday at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs. Game 2 and, if necessary, Game 3 will be held Saturday. The match-up pits two schools about 25 miles apart. The players have crossed paths on the youth circuit, and both schools had entries in a fall league at Asheboro’s McCrary Park. UCA won the 2019 state title.
