Wheatmore swimmer Spencer Hall   Several athletes from around Randolph County signed letters of intent or made college commitments when the early signing period began last week. Some of these had been previously announced intentions. Baseball players were among those most active. From Randleman’s 2021 state-championship team, five players confirmed their intentions. They were Brooks Brannon to North Carolina, Kaden Ethier to Montreat, Braylen Hayes to UNC Greensboro, Trey Way to Virginia Tech and Ryan White to Western Carolina. Black claims victory in Mischa Sell Memorial

SOPHIA – Tony Black was the winner in the Limited Late Models feature as part of the Mischa Sell Memorial racing card Saturday at Caraway Speedway. Black led the 15-car field, with Mitchell Wright the runner-up and Casey Kepley in third place across the 100 laps. Black also won the pole bonus. The pole runner-up was Zack Clifton, who finished 10th. In 602 Modifieds, Lee Jeffreys finished first, followed by Junior Snow and Carson Loftin among 10 drivers. The UCars victory went to Allen Vance, with Daniel Hughes second and Steven Collins in third.

ELIAS ALSTON Eastern Randolph | Football | Senior Alston turned in yet another big game for the Wildcats, this time scoring four touchdowns in the team’s second-round game in the Class 1-A state playoffs. Alston scored on a pair of receptions as part of his 159-yard receiving out. He also returned a punt for a touchdown. Alston is a senior receiver who also plays as a defensive back.

RAMSEUR — The state playoffs sure become interesting in a hurry for Eastern Randolph. The Wildcats opened play in the Class 1-A West Region with a romp past No. 16 seed Draughn on Friday night. That sends Eastern Randolph (10-0), the No. 1 seed, into a third-round matchup this week with visiting Murphy. Murphy (8-4) is the reigning Class 1-A state champion. “We’ll go to work on it,” Eastern Randolph coach Burton said of the assignment. “We just take one game at a time. PLEASANT GARDEN – Faith Christian School twins Karrie Gaines and Kylie Gaines were the top two runners in the North Carolina Christian School Association’s state cross country meet Thursday at Hagan-Stone Park. The duo led a wave of strong finishes for Faith Christian, which secured the team championship for the second season in a row. Karrie Gaines posted a time of 20 minutes, 27.81 seconds on the 5-kilometer course to repeat as individual champion. Kylie Gaines was next in 21:42.18. Airy on Monday night in the third round of the Class 1-A state playoffs. “We’ve had an amazing season, the best season our school has ever had,” UCA coach Nathan Russell said. “We gave it our absolute all. SOPHIA – Matt Hirschman of Pennsylvania won for the first time on the North-South Shootout circuit, claiming the 19th annual John Blewett III race Saturday at Caraway Speedway. “This race has always been big in my career,” Hirschman said. “In the early part of my career it was the biggest. RAMSEUR — A week off prior to opening the state playoffs might be a good omen for Eastern Randolph’s football team. When that happened during the past spring for the state playoffs, it worked out. “We really played our best game against Clinton,” coach Burton Cates said. “You’ve got to look at the positives.” The situation is different, though, this season. County football teams fall in playoff openers

ASHEBORO — The first round of the Class 2-A state playoffs didn’t go well for Randolph County teams. All three of the entries had their seasons end with losses. That included home games for Providence Grove and Southwestern Randolph. At Climax, Providence Grove fell 27-26 in overtime to Forest Hills, when a failed two-point conversion play resulted in the season ending. Providence Grove, which was seeded eighth in the West Region, ended up with an 8-3 record. The Patriots are 0-10 all-time in state-playoff games. Forest Hills moves on with a 7-4 record.
