ARHMAN TYSON Asheboro | Wrestling | Senior Tyson won six matches during the week, one of several Blue Comets to sweep their bouts. Tyson, a senior, completes in the heavyweight division. He posted victories in matchups with Ragsdale and East Chapel Hill as part of a tri-meet with the Asheboro team winning in each case as well. Then in Saturday’s Forbush Falcon Duals, Tyson won four more times as Asheboro posted a 2-2 record in the event. RAMSEUR — All season it was Eastern Randolph that captured momentum and carried that to football victory after victory.   But that wasn’t the case in the third round of the Class 1-A state playoffs. Prep Notes: UCA wrestling tourney to focus on veterans

There are a couple of wrestling tournaments in Randolph County set for Saturday. Uwharrie Charter Academy will hold the Wounded Warrior Challenge. The UCA event will offer free admission to veterans. Arrangements have been made for veterans from the Wounded Warrior Project to be present. During a pause in the competition, a recognition ceremony will be held for veterans. Champions in each weight class will receive a custom Wounded Warrior singlet from MyHouse, which makes sports gear. Also, the Wheatmore Warriors Duals will be held. Wheatmore swimmer Spencer Hall   Several athletes from around Randolph County signed letters of intent or made college commitments when the early signing period began last week. Some of these had been previously announced intentions. Baseball players were among those most active. From Randleman’s 2021 state-championship team, five players confirmed their intentions. They were Brooks Brannon to North Carolina, Kaden Ethier to Montreat, Braylen Hayes to UNC Greensboro, Trey Way to Virginia Tech and Ryan White to Western Carolina. Black claims victory in Mischa Sell Memorial

SOPHIA – Tony Black was the winner in the Limited Late Models feature as part of the Mischa Sell Memorial racing card Saturday at Caraway Speedway. Black led the 15-car field, with Mitchell Wright the runner-up and Casey Kepley in third place across the 100 laps. Black also won the pole bonus. The pole runner-up was Zack Clifton, who finished 10th. In 602 Modifieds, Lee Jeffreys finished first, followed by Junior Snow and Carson Loftin among 10 drivers. The UCars victory went to Allen Vance, with Daniel Hughes second and Steven Collins in third.

ELIAS ALSTON Eastern Randolph | Football | Senior Alston turned in yet another big game for the Wildcats, this time scoring four touchdowns in the team’s second-round game in the Class 1-A state playoffs. PLEASANT GARDEN – Faith Christian School twins Karrie Gaines and Kylie Gaines were the top two runners in the North Carolina Christian School Association’s state cross country meet Thursday at Hagan-Stone Park. The duo led a wave of strong finishes for Faith Christian, which secured the team championship for the second season in a row. Karrie Gaines posted a time of 20 minutes, 27.81 seconds on the 5-kilometer course to repeat as individual champion. Kylie Gaines was next in 21:42.18.
