Athlete of the Week: Harley Moyer

Harley Moyer is a senior defensive back on the Union Pines football team. The Vikings are 4-1, and the defense is a big reason why. Union Pines shut out their first three opponents this season and held Lee County to just 6 points, their fewest in nine seasons. Moyer tied for the team high in tackles against Lee, with nine, including eight solo stops. He also recovered a fumble in the 7-6 victory. Pinecrest volleyball sophomore Emily Regtuyt is Athlete of the Week. The Patriots have won four of their last five, including two of three last week, and are now 9-5 on the year and leading the Sandhills at 5-0. Regtuyt had six blocks in a win over Scotland, adding three kills, an ace, two digs and two assists. For the year, she leads the team in blocks and is second in hitting percentage. Her 42 blocks also lead the Sandhills Conference.

Moore County lost one unbeaten last week but still has an undefeated football team. Here’s a look at where the three schools across the county stand on the gridiron. Union Pines The Vikings suffered their first loss of the season, after opening 3-0. Union Pines fell to Randleman, 21-7, on the road. The three straight wins to open the year gave Union Pines as many wins as it had in any of the last three full seasons. North Moore football senior Brandon Powell is Athlete of the Week. The Mustangs fell to 0-3 on the year with a loss to Northwood, but Powell went out on his shield in the game. He rushed for 213 yards on 21 carries, scoring once. He had a long run of 61 yards and added a catch for 25. Powell currently leads North Moore in rushing and scoring and is among the conference leaders in rushing yards.

Athlete of the Week: Chris Najm

Chris Najm is a junior on the Pinecrest football team. The Patriots moved to 2-0 on the year with a win against Overhills, and, for the second straight week, Najm found the end zone three times. He rushed for 85 yards on 15 carries and scored three rushing touchdowns. For the year, Najm leads Pinecrest in rushing yards and touchdowns. He’s the Sandhills Conference scoring leader and ranks second in the league in rushing and total yards. Najm also ranks 20th in the state in rushing, seventh in touchdowns and eleventh in total points.

Union Pines grabs seven interceptions in 35-0 win over Northwood

CAMERON — Union Pines (2-0, 0-0) put on a defensive masterclass in its 35-0 win over the Chargers (0-2, 0-0) Friday. The Vikings intercepted the Chargers seven times thanks to different looks and constant pressure from its defensive line and a solid display of ball skills in the secondary. Union Pines football senior Caleb Milton is Athlete of the Week. The Vikings beat Triton 42-0 to open the season, and Milton played both ways, contributing on offense and defense. Milton only had seven carries for Union Pines, but four of them reached the end zone as he made the most of his 32 rushing yards. On defense, he returned an interception 38 yards for a fifth touchdown and also recovered a fumble. Not to neglect special teams, Milton also returned a kick 45 yards.

Football kicked off on Friday, and two of the three area schools found success on the gridiron. Union Pines Union Pines got a shutout victory, blanking Triton, 42-0, on the road. Athlete of the Week Caleb Milton scored five touchdowns, four rushing and one on an interception return, while senior running back Jeremiah Carraway had 107 rushing yards on 12 carries. Pinecrest volleyball senior Brooke Emore is Athlete of the Week. The Patriots opened the season with four straight wins and stand at 4-2, entering the week. Emore leads the team with 36 kills (3.3 per set), eight serving aces (0.7 per set) and a .274 hitting percentage. She is also third on the team in digs and blocks and second in receptions.
