Athlete of the Week: Chris Najm

Chris Najm is a junior on the Pinecrest football team. The Patriots moved to 2-0 on the year with a win against Overhills, and, for the second straight week, Najm found the end zone three times. He rushed for 85 yards on 15 carries and scored three rushing touchdowns. For the year, Najm leads Pinecrest in rushing yards and touchdowns. He’s the Sandhills Conference scoring leader and ranks second in the league in rushing and total yards. Najm also ranks 20th in the state in rushing, seventh in touchdowns and eleventh in total points.

Union Pines grabs seven interceptions in 35-0 win over Northwood

CAMERON — Union Pines (2-0, 0-0) put on a defensive masterclass in its 35-0 win over the Chargers (0-2, 0-0) Friday. The Vikings intercepted the Chargers seven times thanks to different looks and constant pressure from its defensive line and a solid display of ball skills in the secondary. Athlete of the Week: Caleb Milton

Union Pines football senior Caleb Milton is Athlete of the Week. The Vikings beat Triton 42-0 to open the season, and Milton played both ways, contributing on offense and defense. Milton only had seven carries for Union Pines, but four of them reached the end zone as he made the most of his 32 rushing yards. On defense, he returned an interception 38 yards for a fifth touchdown and also recovered a fumble. Not to neglect special teams, Milton also returned a kick 45 yards.

Two football teams start seasons with wins

Football kicked off on Friday, and two of the three area schools found success on the gridiron. Union Pines Union Pines got a shutout victory, blanking Triton, 42-0, on the road. Athlete of the Week Caleb Milton scored five touchdowns, four rushing and one on an interception return, while senior running back Jeremiah Carraway had 107 rushing yards on 12 carries. Pinecrest volleyball senior Brooke Emore is Athlete of the Week. The Patriots opened the season with four straight wins and stand at 4-2, entering the week. Emore leads the team with 36 kills (3.3 per set), eight serving aces (0.7 per set) and a .274 hitting percentage. She is also third on the team in digs and blocks and second in receptions.

High school football set to open on Friday

Boys’ soccer: Union Pines was the first team to hit the field in the 2024-25 school year. The Vikings went 1-2 in the first week of action, beating Hunt, 1-0, on a goal by Kael Jahn. Union Pines then fell, 1-0 to Northside-Jacksonville and 6-0, to Jacksonville. This week, the Vikings play at Fike, then finally have their home opener, against Rocky Mount. Garrett Wolff is a Wilmington native and a rising senior at St. Andrews University, where he’s an infielder on the baseball team. Wolff spent the summer playing for Moore County’s Sandhills Bogeys in the Old North State League, a summer college league. The Bogeys reached the Old North State League finals, where they fell just short of a title, losing the best-of-three championship series to the Clayton Clovers in two straight games. Aidan Allred, a shortstop for the Sandhills Bogeys in the Old North State League, earns athlete of the week honors for the week of July 22. Allred had his best batting game of the season in the Bogeys’ 8-2 series-clinching win over the Brunswick Surfin’ Turfs in the first round of the ONSL playoffs Saturday. He went 2-for-4 from the plate and knocked in one RBI while getting walked in another plate appearance. That was Allred’s first two-hit game since June 24 when he went 2-for-5 and recorded two RBIs. Pinehurst native Hogan Windish is the Athlete of the Week. Windish currently plays for the Double-A Arkansas Travelers in the Texas League. He is a member of the Seattle Mariners organization after being drafted in the seventh round in 2022. Windish, who played for Ashe County High and UNC Greensboro, hit 22 home runs last year in Class A, earning him a promotion for this season. He had a history-making game last Tuesday when he hit four home runs and drove in all of his team’s runs in a 9-4 win over Springfield. Only one other player in baseball history…
