Athlete of the Week: Caleb Milton

Union Pines football senior Caleb Milton is Athlete of the Week. The Vikings beat Triton 42-0 to open the season, and Milton played both ways, contributing on offense and defense. Milton only had seven carries for Union Pines, but four of them reached the end zone as he made the most of his 32 rushing yards. On defense, he returned an interception 38 yards for a fifth touchdown and also recovered a fumble. Not to neglect special teams, Milton also returned a kick 45 yards.

Garrett Wolff is a Wilmington native and a rising senior at St. Andrews University, where he’s an infielder on the baseball team. Wolff spent the summer playing for Moore County’s Sandhills Bogeys in the Old North State League, a summer college league. The Bogeys reached the Old North State League finals, where they fell just short of a title, losing the best-of-three championship series to the Clayton Clovers in two straight games. Aidan Allred, a shortstop for the Sandhills Bogeys in the Old North State League, earns athlete of the week honors for the week of July 22. Allred had his best batting game of the season in the Bogeys’ 8-2 series-clinching win over the Brunswick Surfin’ Turfs in the first round of the ONSL playoffs Saturday. Pinehurst native Hogan Windish is the Athlete of the Week. Windish currently plays for the Double-A Arkansas Travelers in the Texas League. He is a member of the Seattle Mariners organization after being drafted in the seventh round in 2022. Windish, who played for Ashe County High and UNC Greensboro, hit 22 home runs last year in Class A, earning him a promotion for this season. Bryant Kimbrell, a graduated senior for the Pinecrest baseball team, is Athlete of the Week. Kimbrell won Athlete of the Week after the Patriots got off to a 4-0 start to the season. Neither he nor Pinecrest slowed down after that burst out of the gate. The Patriots finished with a 24-5 record and won the Sandhills with an 11-1 league record. Athlete of the Week: Wesley Little

Pinecrest boys’ lacrosse junior Wesley Little is the Athlete of the Week. The three-time conference champions have won 28 straight games in the United 8/All American/Sandhills Conference, including a 10-0 mark in the league this year. Little, the Patriots’ goalkeeper, led the conference in goals-against average and save percentage. He also finished second in the state in save percentage and sixth in goals against average. Janie Spicer is a senior for the Union Pines’ girls’ lacrosse team. The Vikings won their first-ever state title and wrapped up an undefeated season. Spicer led the way winning NCHSAA Most Valuable Player honors after scoring three goals, with four assists, in the championship game. She also took the NCHSAA Sportsmanship Award.
