ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Christopher Betancourt

Christopher Betancourt is a sophomore on the North Moore men’s soccer team. The younger brother of previous Athlete of the Week Ricky Betancourt, the duo has been the offensive spark for the Mustangs this season. Christopher ranks near the top of the team in goals and assists. His penalty kick goal gave North Moore the early lead in 4-1 win over Vance Charter in the second round of the state playoffs. The 3-seed Mustangs played Southside after press time for a berth in the round of 8.

Athlete of the Week: Jakarey Gillis

Jakarey Gillis is a senior running back for the North Moore football team. The Mustangs won their third straight game last Friday, a 48-7 shellacking of Seaforth, and Gillis was a big reason why. He rushed for 244 yards on 18 carries and scored four touchdowns, giving him 14 on the season, one shy of his total for all of last year. Gillis has 998 rushing yards on the year and has more touchdowns than any two other Mustangs combined.

Jacey Olsen is a senior outside hitter and team captain for the Pinecrest volleyball team.   Pinecrest volleyball went 2-1 last week, sweeping conference foes Richmond and Southern Lee, while dropping a non-conference tilt at Green Hope. Union Pines, volleyball, tennis Tyne Ross is a two-sport senior for Union Pines, and that’s just in the fall. Ross is pulling double duty on the Vikings Volleyball and Women’s Tennis teams. Last week, she had 26 kills, 3 blocks and 25 digs in Union Pines’ loss to Pinecrest. That was Tuesday. Wednesday night, she won first singles, 6-0, in Union Pines’ 6-0 tennis win over Scotland. North Moore, men’s soccer Ricky Betancourt is a senior on the North Moore men’s soccer team. Betancourt had a hat trick in last Monday’s win over Bartlett Yancey, adding two assists in the 10-1 win. Two days later, he had two goals in a 3-1 overtime win over Seaforth. Betancourt leads the Vikings in goals on the season and is second in assists, as North Moore has run out to an unbeaten 6-0-1 mark, 4-0-1 in conference play.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Sean Adkins

Southwestern Randolph  |  Boys’ Basketball  |  Junior Adkins poured in 20 points as the Cougars secured a 61-48 non-conference victory last week at Chatham Central. It’s a huge point total for the junior considering Southwestern Randolph has struggled at times on the offensive end. Coupled with the previous Friday’s road victory at Randleman (when Adkins had 12 points), that’s back-to-back wins for the Cougars, who improved to 5-4 overall. The result against Chatham Central marked only the third time this season that the Cougars reached the 60-point mark.

Gracyn Hall | Randleman | Girls Basketball Hall was the leading scorer in two of the Tigers’ three games last week. She averaged 19.3 points in those games as Randleman improved its record to 5-0. Last week’s victories included two on the road. They won 51-42 at Oak Grove, defeated visiting Ledford 56-35 and then captured their Piedmont Athletic Conference opener by 61-52 at Wheatmore.
