Copperheads announce name change to ZooKeepers

ASHEBORO — The Asheboro Copperheads announced this morning that they will change their name to the Asheboro ZooKeepers. At a press conference at the Asheboro Recreation Center Gymnasium, the team, which was founded in 1999, blasted Guns 'N Roses's "Welcome to the Jungle" as they unveiled logos and uniforms for the team. The team's colors will change to a safari-theme with tan and brown dominating the logo and uniforms. Gone will be the burnt orange and black of the Copperheads. According to a release from the team, the ZooKeepers will have four official colors: khaki, brown, black, and jungle green.…

One dead after shooting in Randleman

RANDLEMAN — One person is dead after a shooting at a part in Randleman on Saturday night. Just before midnight on Saturday night, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting at a residence on Leonae Drive in Randleman. The victim, Daniel Lopez Vences, 20, had been transported in a private vehicle to Randolph Hospital prior to the arrival of law enforcement. The alleged shooter had also fled the scene. Uwharrie Charter Academy | Wrestling Palma secured first place in the girls’ division of the Holy Angels Invitational last week in Charlotte. It was a rare event set up with several brackets for girls. Palma captured first place at 113 pounds. In the title match, she defeated Martha Dominguez of Purnell Swett with a 50-second pin.

County and city schools delayed 3 hours

ASHEBORO — After strong winds, snow and power outages caused school cancellations across Randolph County on Monday, the first school of of the new year, the second school day of 2022 will also start with a delay. Randolph County Schools and Asheboro City Schools will both operate on a three-hour delay Tuesday. In a statement announcing the delay, the county school system said the delay was "due to concerns about road conditions in the early morning hours." ASHEBORO — As intense weather swept through Randolph County, the Randolph County School System initially delayed the start of school on Monday by two hours. After assessing power outages, fallen trees and high winds, the system decided to cancel classes Monday which were scheduled to restart after the holiday break.
