Food Truck Rodeo in Carthage a tasty success

CARTHAGE — The Carthage Fire Department recently held a Food Truck Rodeo for the community on Sept. 16, where thousands of people turned out for a taste of almost two dozen food trucks, fun and games for the kids, and socializing with friends and family. “This is an event we put on for the community - not really a fund-raiser for us - just to get everyone to come together, fun for kids and lots of good food,” said Vice-President of the Carthage Firefighters Association Bradley Whitaker. In the half-decade since the event began, about 2,000 people, on average, turn…

Moore County Schools makes headway in returning to pre-pandemic learning levels

RALEIGH — Moore County Public Schools (MCS) appears to be making headway in returning to pre-pandemic student achievement and school performance ratings. MCS reported on the district’s testing and school grades for the 2022-23 school year following the Sept. 6 release of testing accountability and school performance data by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). According to MCS, the district outperformed the state of North Carolina in all 18 tested areas. Like most of the districts in the state, MCS proficiency levels increased across all testing subject areas with a few exceptions. “Prior to the pandemic, in 2018-2019,…

HUDSON: We will always remember

HUDSON: We will always remember

September 11th, 2001 was one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. The images of 9/11 remain ingrained into the collective memory of Americans across our nation. I still remember watching TV when the second airplane crashed into the World Trade Center that morning. What we witnessed in the hours and days that followed were some of the most courageous and heroic acts of good. We saw hundreds of first responders rush into the smoke and flames of those burning buildings, passing civilians fleeing. We heard about the courageous passengers on United Airlines Flight 93 who sacrificed their lives…

Report: Community college student’s program access blocked by COVID vaccination status

RALEIGH — A report of a student in a community college health education program having her access to clinical sites blocked due to her vaccination status recently surfaced on social media.  In a thread on X, formerly known as Twitter, Envisage Law firm attorney James Lawrence made the claims that a female student was denied access to the Sandhills Community College health program based on the fact she was unvaccinated.   “Community colleges in NC are discriminating against students who want to be part of the health care profession because they declined a COVID-19 vaccine,” Lawrence wrote in the thread. “@SandhillsCC…

HUDSON: Back to school season in the Sandhills

What would you do with an extra $700 in your pocket each month?  Unfortunately, that is the cost of  “Bidenomics” and inflation—but it shouldn’t have to be that way.  The opportunity to work hard and pursue a better life for your family has always been at the bedrock of our nation. However, inflation continues to make it difficult for hardworking families to make ends meet and afford goods and services.  Did you know the average American household now spends $709 more a month than they did two years ago for the same goods and services? Average monthly mortgage payments are…
