Athlete of the Week: Jakarey Gillis

Jakarey Gillis is a senior running back for the North Moore football team. The Mustangs won their third straight game last Friday, a 48-7 shellacking of Seaforth, and Gillis was a big reason why. He rushed for 244 yards on 18 carries and scored four touchdowns, giving him 14 on the season, one shy of his total for all of last year. Gillis has 998 rushing yards on the year and has more touchdowns than any two other Mustangs combined.

Bye weeks are over for the schools in Moore County and all three teams were back in action on a rainy Friday. Union Pines, Pinecrest and North Moore all posted wins in a successful night of football for the county. Pinecrest 20, Richmond 12: The Patriots improved to 5-0 on the season and won their conference opener with their first win in Richmond since 2008. With bad weather threatening, Pinecrest jumped out to an early lead on touchdown runs by Jaylin Morgan and Zymire Spencer. Pinecrest gets lone football win in the county 

Week two of the high school football season saw two of the three local teams go down in defeat.   Pinecrest was the lone team to record a win, moving to 2-0 on the season with a 44-20 road win over 0-2 Overhills. The Patriots have scored 92 points in their first two games. Two of three county football teams start off with wins 

It was a successful start to the 2023 high school football season for two of the three teams in the area. North Moore High School and Pinecrest High School both opened their seasons with non-conference wins, while Union Pines High School took a loss in the opener.   North Moore, coming off a 13-1 season last year and trip to the state quarterfinals, got off on the right foot as the Mustangs shut out Carver, 27-0, on the road.
