Athlete of the Week: Caleb Milton

Union Pines football senior Caleb Milton is Athlete of the Week. The Vikings beat Triton 42-0 to open the season, and Milton played both ways, contributing on offense and defense. Milton only had seven carries for Union Pines, but four of them reached the end zone as he made the most of his 32 rushing yards. On defense, he returned an interception 38 yards for a fifth touchdown and also recovered a fumble. Not to neglect special teams, Milton also returned a kick 45 yards.

Two football teams start seasons with wins

Football kicked off on Friday, and two of the three area schools found success on the gridiron. Union Pines Union Pines got a shutout victory, blanking Triton, 42-0, on the road. Athlete of the Week Caleb Milton scored five touchdowns, four rushing and one on an interception return, while senior running back Jeremiah Carraway had 107 rushing yards on 12 carries. The Vikings have their home opener against Northwood on Friday, at 7:30. Athlete of the Week: Brooke Emore

Sportsathlete of the week, Brooke Emore

Pinecrest volleyball senior Brooke Emore is Athlete of the Week. The Patriots opened the season with four straight wins and stand at 4-2, entering the week. Emore leads the team with 36 kills (3.3 per set), eight serving aces (0.7 per set) and a .274 hitting percentage. She is also third on the team in digs and blocks and second in receptions.

High school football set to open on Friday

Boys’ soccer: Union Pines was the first team to hit the field in the 2024-25 school year. The Vikings went 1-2 in the first week of action, beating Hunt, 1-0, on a goal by Kael Jahn. Union Pines then fell, 1-0 to Northside-Jacksonville and 6-0, to Jacksonville. This week, the Vikings play at Fike, then finally have their home opener, against Rocky Mount. Athlete of the Week: Garrett Wolff

Garrett Wolff is a Wilmington native and a rising senior at St. Andrews University, where he’s an infielder on the baseball team. Wolff spent the summer playing for Moore County’s Sandhills Bogeys in the Old North State League, a summer college league. The Bogeys reached the Old North State League finals, where they fell just short of a title, losing the best-of-three championship series to the Clayton Clovers in two straight games. Aidan Allred, a shortstop for the Sandhills Bogeys in the Old North State League, earns athlete of the week honors for the week of July 22. Allred had his best batting game of the season in the Bogeys’ 8-2 series-clinching win over the Brunswick Surfin’ Turfs in the first round of the ONSL playoffs Saturday. He went 2-for-4 from the plate and knocked in one RBI while getting walked in another plate appearance. That was Allred’s first two-hit game since June 24 when he went 2-for-5 and recorded two RBIs. Pinehurst native Hogan Windish is the Athlete of the Week. Windish currently plays for the Double-A Arkansas Travelers in the Texas League. He is a member of the Seattle Mariners organization after being drafted in the seventh round in 2022. Windish, who played for Ashe County High and UNC Greensboro, hit 22 home runs last year in Class A, earning him a promotion for this season. He had a history-making game last Tuesday when he hit four home runs and drove in all of his team’s runs in a 9-4 win over Springfield. Only one other player in baseball history…

Bryant Kimbrell, a graduated senior for the Pinecrest baseball team, is Athlete of the Week. Kimbrell won Athlete of the Week after the Patriots got off to a 4-0 start to the season. Neither he nor Pinecrest slowed down after that burst out of the gate. The Patriots finished with a 24-5 record and won the Sandhills with an 11-1 league record. Will Kennedy is a senior for the North Moore baseball team who will be playing for Wake Tech at the college level next year. After playing the outfield in previous seasons, Kennedy became a two-way player in his final season. In addition to hitting over .400 for the Mustangs, he also was the Mid-Carolina Conference’s pitcher of the year. He struck out more than 50 batters and had an ERA of just over 2.30.
