Athlete of the Week: Brandon Powell

North Moore football senior running back Brandon Powell is Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. The Mustangs won their second straight game after an 0-4 start, blowing out Bartlett Yancey 55‑22 last Friday. North Moore didn’t throw a pass in the game, rushing for 488 yards. Powell had more than half of them, carrying 23 times for 269 yards, an average of 11.7 yards per carry. He also scored six touchdowns. Powell is the state’s No.3 rusher at the 1A level and leads the Mid-Carolina Conference.

Athlete of the Week: Blake Pennington

North Moore football freshman Blake Pennington is Athlete of the Week. Playing with older brother Colby, a North Moore senior this season, in their only year together, Blake has quickly made a name for himself on the Mustangs defense. He is averaging more than 10 tackles a game to lead the team. In North Moore’s shutout win over Jordan-Matthews last week, Pennington had a game-high 14 tackles. He also added two tackles for loss, giving him three on the season, to go with one sack. Pennington also blocked two punts against the Jets.

Both local teams were victorious in the first round of the state playoffs on Friday and will advance to round two this week. Pinecrest 45, South Garner 31 The Pinecrest Patriots stormed back in the second half to defeat South Garner 45-31 on Friday night in the first round of the state playoffs. Pinecrest trailed 24-14 at the half, with the scoring coming from two Jaylin Morgan touchdowns. It was a successful weekend for high school football teams in the county, as squads representing Moore County went a perfect 3-0 in Week Three.   In addition to North Moore’s win over Northwood, Pinecrest and Union Pines both landed in the win column on Friday.   Pinecrest moved to 3-0 on the season with a 27-24 win over Middle Creek, dropping the Mustangs to 1-2 on the season. North Moore out-muscles Northwood, 38-12, in conference opener 

North Moore (2-1, 1-0) ran all over Northwood (1-2, 0-1) Friday night, beating the Chargers, 38-12, in the first week of conference play.  The Mustangs overpowered the Chargers with their physicality in the run game and on the defensive side of the ball.
