The singles winner was Logan Maness, who defeated Clara Rojas in two sets, 6-4 and 7-6. In doubles action, Bailea Marley & Paris McCollum defeated Abbey Copeland & Corrine McLaurin 8-6. Their next match is at home against South Davidson on October 4, followed by an away match at Chatham Central on October 5. Their record is 2-6 and 2-5 in the conference. WHISPERING PINES — Alec Allred of Whispering Pines is making a career out of baseball, and it’s not on the field. He’s the president of the Old North State League, a summer college circuit that wrapped up what he called a successful season earlier this summer. “This is my full-time job now, trying to coordinate everything,” Allred said. “It’s a lot that goes into it, but it’s a ton of fun.” The Sandhills Bogeys, who are based in Pinehurst, won the 2022 championship, beating the Hendersonville Honeycrisps in the final. BURLINGTON — Pinecrest couldn’t dent Charlotte Providence’s perfect season, but the Patriots left the Class 3-A baseball state finals with an experience worth savoring. Senior Games registration is open

SOUTHERN PINES — Registration for the 39th Annual Senior Games in the Pines is underway through March 25. The games are sponsored by the Moore County Senior Enrichment Center along with the Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Pinehurst and county recreation departments and are an official preliminary competition for the North Carolina Senior Games. Competitions begin March 31 and run through May 12. The competition includes bowling, swimming, golf, tennis, badminton, pickleball, running among other individual and team events. The games also include performing, literary and visual arts. The state finals will be held in September and October.

Volunteers sought for US Adaptive Open

PINEHURST — The USGA has established the U.S. Adaptive Open Championship, a new national championship that will showcase the world’s best golfers with disabilities. The inaugural competition will be conducted on Course No. 6 at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club July 18-20. The announcement of the championship follows through on a 2017 pledge by the USGA to establish a championship for the adaptive golf community. The Union Pines Vikings set their sights on another trophy as the state dual team tournament started this week. All three county teams make state wrestling tournament

PINEHURST — The Union Pines Vikings captured their 15th straight conference championship in varsity wrestling last week. The Vikings topped the Sandhills Athletic Conference tournament with 224 points. Pinecrest was second with 203.5 points. Following the conference tournaments, all three county schools advanced to the state tournament. North Moore bowed out after a first-round loss to Albemarle in the 1A tournament.
