Moore County ends year on a hectic note

CARTHAGE — Perhaps the biggest stories of Moore County this year came within the last two months: November elections and the December substation attack.  On December 3, two substations were damaged by gunfire, leaving nearly 40,000 residents in the dark for nearly a week. During a press conference, Sheriff Ronnie Fields – who won reelection in November – said that the attacks were “targeted” and not random. The attacks raised a lot of eyebrows due to the nature of their proximity to military installations, as well as due to the nature and severity of the damage. The investigation into the…

GINGRICH: Balance the budget, stop inflation, create jobs

The new Republican majority in the U.S. House will face a major challenge dealing with the Democrat-run White House and U.S. Senate. So, it is vital that Republicans offer a vision of a more successful, prosperous, safer, and freer America. The first goal is not to find a common ground with left-wing, radical Democrats who reject virtually all our values. They are already tuning their political machine to fight us in 2024. The first goal is to give the American people a sense of hope — and a belief that things can be dramatically better. (The lack of a positive…

HUDSON: My commitment to you

HUDSON: My commitment to you

Sunday is Gold Star Mother’s and Family Day, where we honor the mothers, fathers, siblings, and all other family members of the brave U.S. servicemembers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Military families, especially Gold Star Families, have sacrificed so much in defense of our nation. We will never forget these families’ and their fallen loved ones’ service and sacrifice. One way to honor them is to live a life worthy of their sacrifice. We must also make sure we each do our part to keep this nation free, safe, and strong. Unfortunately, America’s freedom, safety, and…

KRUEGER: The Cobra Effect

KRUEGER: The Cobra Effect

It seems like Democrat leaders are lacking common sense and an understanding of history.   What President Joe Biden, his Democrat minions, and his media lapdogs have instead is a massive spending agenda masked in Orwellian newspeak.  They blithely and disingenuously refer to their $737 billion prodigal plan as an Inflation Reduction Act, their $ 2.2 trillion spending spree as Build Back Better, and their $350 billion spendthrift scheme as the American Recovery Act.  According to economic experts at the Penn Wharton Business School, the Inflation Reduction Act will have little to no effect on inflation.  The Congressional Budget Office…

HUDSON: American families’ top concerns remain inflation, gas prices, and the economy in general

“Government of the people, by the people, for the people…” This phrase in President Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” captures perhaps the most basic foundation of our political system: political authority rests first and foremost with the American people. When our founders conceived our nation 246 years ago, they sought to create a government whose power was derived from the will of the people, and that existed to protect those people’s God-given rights and address the issues most important to them. Unfortunately, many of those at the helm of government today have failed to do this. A recent poll by Monmouth…

Another agriculture center proposal coming to Randolph

Another agriculture center proposal coming to Randolph

ASHEBORO — County leaders will again be considering an agriculture center proposal which could bring development to a county-owned parcel on East Dixie Drive in Asheboro. The county bought land in 2016 with a potential agriculture center in mind. Plans for that facility were presented and considered after the land was acquired with costs estimates at $58 million. That earlier proposal would have resulted in tax increases to fund both the construction and operation of the facility. The county commissioners passed a resolution in 2019 asking the state for up to $10 million in funding to support a “first phase”…

Hiring issues impact Zoo

ASHEBORO — At the same time the North Carolina Zoo is seeing a huge increase in visitors compared with last year, it's struggling to find staff to keep all of its exhibits open. Most attractions are open, but certain features like an obstacle course and feeding activities have remained closed. Twenty people recently turned out for a job fair with dozens of open positions. Many of the jobs at the zoo are part time, temporary and pay about $10 to $12 per hour.
