HUDSON: Year in review and the year ahead

HUDSON: Year in review and the year ahead

Another year is drawing to a close. In 2022, we’ve seen the best of our community come together, and we’ve had our fair share of challenges. Across the country this year, we’ve seen the highest inflation rates in 40 years and record high costs at the gas pump. These are both due in large part to misguided policy decisions by Washington Democrats. Additionally, we have seen a humanitarian and national security crisis at our southern border, as record numbers of illegal migrants crossed into the country this past year. This border crisis has created a worsening fentanyl epidemic in every…

HUDSON: Love thy neighbor

HUDSON: Love thy neighbor

“Love thy neighbor.” It’s one of the most important commands found in the Bible. And last week, we saw it in action in our community. The reprehensible attack on two power substations in Moore County left hospitals, health care providers, schools, businesses, and nearly 40,000 homes without power for several days. Thanks to the incredible efforts of hardworking men and women from Duke Energy, Randolph Electric Membership Corporation, the NC Department of Transportation, as well as state and county officials, law enforcement, and emergency personnel, Moore County was able to restore power by Wednesday while keeping families safe. I cannot…

THOMPSON: Small Business Saturday

THOMPSON: Small Business Saturday

Black Friday is the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, but with its doorbusters and discounts, I think it’s become of time of grabbing rather than of giving.  If you’re looking for the holiday spirit, go shopping the next day, Small Business Saturday.   Small Business Saturday, which is always on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, is a day to find unique gifts and enjoy a level of service you probably won’t find at the national chains, but it’s also a day to help the local shops and restaurants that do so much to help their communities throughout the year. …

LOVELL: Brian Part 2 — God’s Campus in Sandhills

LOVELL: Brian Part 2 — God’s Campus in Sandhills

Brian told the rest of his story.   Brian came out of rehab clean but not committed. He sought drugs immediately. He had become an expert at deception, staying just ahead of getting caught by his family and friends. He had learned how to beat the system and fake the drug tests. In seven months, he had lost another girlfriend, another forty pounds, and a future. Desperate to find a life, he switched to Tamerol, an accepted synthetic opioid, and enlisted in the Navy. The night before his deployment, he was arrested. Brian said he landed in “God’s campus,” a…

HUDSON: My commitment to you

HUDSON: My commitment to you

Sunday is Gold Star Mother’s and Family Day, where we honor the mothers, fathers, siblings, and all other family members of the brave U.S. servicemembers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Military families, especially Gold Star Families, have sacrificed so much in defense of our nation. We will never forget these families’ and their fallen loved ones’ service and sacrifice. One way to honor them is to live a life worthy of their sacrifice. We must also make sure we each do our part to keep this nation free, safe, and strong. Unfortunately, America’s freedom, safety, and…

BARONE: The Espionage Act of 1917 once again rears its ugly head

BARONE: The Espionage Act of 1917 once again rears its ugly head

When federal agents removed top-secret documents from former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence last week, they carried with them a search warrant citing possible violations of the Espionage Act.  Ah, the Espionage Act! How that must have sounded comfortingly confirmatory to those leftists who still believe, despite the total lack of evidence, that Trump was elected and governed in collusion with Vladimir Putin’s Russia. These reports surely have some folks gleefully contemplating the prospect of the 45th president being consigned to the ten years in the slammer that is the maximum penalty for violations of the Espionage Act. But as…

HUDSON: We will never forget

HUDSON: We will never forget

It’s been one year. But we will never forget. On August 15th, 2021, Kabul, Afghanistan, fell to the Taliban. This event marked the end of our nation’s 20-year involvement in the country. It also marked a blatant moral and national security failure that has had lasting consequences for our country, allies, and the people of Afghanistan. Kabul’s fall one year ago was tragic, it was predictable, and it could have been prevented. President Joe Biden ignored the advice of his military commanders. His rushed and disorganized effort to pull the United States out of the region cost American and Afghan…

ERICKSON: The certitude of ineptitude

ERICKSON: The certitude of ineptitude

I really am flummoxed by the ineptitude of President Joe Biden and his chief of staff, Ron Klain. Biden has been a Washington politician for half a century, including eight years as vice president and before that a senior senator. Klain is a consummate Washington insider, having worked for Janet Reno, Al Gore, Biden and others. How are they this inept? Last summer, the border got swamped with migrants. They sent Vice President Kamala Harris south of the border and the situation never improved. Activists accused border patrol agents of whipping refugees with horsewhips. The White House condemned the act.…

HUDSON: End of mask mandates backed by science, will of the American people

HUDSON: End of mask mandates backed by science, will of the American people

“Government’s first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives.” President Ronald Reagan warned us about the dangers of government overreach when he spoke these words back in 1981. Unfortunately, many of those in power today fail to heed them. Last Monday, a federal judge in Florida struck down President Joe Biden’s travel mask mandate, effectively ending mandates on public transportation. This was a momentous decision and a major victory in the fight to end all mask mandates nationwide. The ruling was met with great excitement and numerous airlines, businesses, and localities lifted their mask requirements almost immediately.…
