TRINITY — Wheatmore advanced in the Class 2-A dual team state playoffs for girls' tennis by edging visiting Reidsville 5-4 in a first-round match that was contested across two days, concluding Thursday. The Warriors won two of three doubles matches. Kara Comer (No. 1 singles), and Mikalah Walls (No. 5) and Carmen Turgeon (No. 6) were winners in singles and doubles for Wheatmore. Third-seeded Uwharrie Charter Academy upset top-seeded Southwestern Randolph to win the Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament for volleyball Wednesday night. The Eagles won 24-26, 16-25, 25-23, 25-13,15-13 against the host school. UCA swept Trinity and Randleman earlier in the week to reach the final. Southwestern Randolph, which swept Wheatmore in the semifinals after a first-round bye, had been undefeated in PAC play. The Cougars received 29 kills and nine digs from Payton Shiflet, 22 digs from Coley Shiflet and 19 digs from Carleigh Whitson. Raegan LeRoy added 39 assists and 17 digs. Uwharrie Charter Academy tops SWR for volleyball title

ASHEBORO — Uwharrie Charter Academy rallied from two sets down to beat in-county rival Southwestern Randolph and capture the Piedmont Athletic Conference Touranment for volleyball Wednesday night. SWR took the first set 26-24 and the second set 25-16. Facing a win-or-go-home third set, UCA charged back to capture the third set 25-13. The Eagles took the fourth set 25-13 and the deciding fifth set 15-13. GRACEY MENSCER Providence Grove High School | Junior | Volleyball Gracey Menscer turned in almost identical outings as the Providence Grove Patriots won twice last week in four sets. Menscer was charted with 48 assists in a victory against Eastern Randolph. Two nights later, Menscer ended up with 48 assists and 12 digs as the Patriots topped Wheatmore. Those outcomes gave Providence Grove a four-match winning streak and a 12-9 overall record heading into this week’s Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament.

Randleman extends all-state streak to a decade

ASHEBORO — The North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association released its 2021 all-state teams and the list is heavy on players from Class 2-A state champion Randleman. Randleman’s Hunter Atkins, Brooks Brannon, Andrew Cox, Braylen Hayes, Trey Way and Ryan White made the Class 2-A list. They were joined by Southwestern Randolph’s Bryson Hogan on the Class 3-A list and Uwharrie Charter Academy’s Hunter Hill and Colt Wilkins on the Class 1-A list.
